 | “I remember
when I was a child, hollyhocks grew
around the sun porch of our house, and ruby-throated hummingbirds were
frequent
visitors. Sometimes now, when I sit on my front porch in the
summertime,
one will hover three feet away from my face, to look at
me. I've even seen them fly backwards, hover again,
then fly
away! I
think perhaps these tiny birds are as curious about me as I am
about them. In this work, I floated a variety of soft colors
into
a wet background to set
off the sharp detail of the foreground hollyhocks and their
extraordinary
guest.”
