Carolina Chickadee and Eastern Red Cedar by A E Ruffing

Carolina Chickadee and Eastern Red Cedar by A E RuffingFor me, nothing typifies winter more than the sight of a Black-capped Chickadee perched on a snowy branch. I’ve given this alert and sprightly bird a background of soft wintry colors with just a suggestion of trees against the sky.

This little bird has been a part of my “Songbirds of the South” collector plate series from Oxmoor House/Southern Living Gallery, and he’s been on a holiday card from the National Wildlife Federation.

I am making a limited number of reproductions of this image as a signed giclée print as well, which may be ordered by emailing us at [email protected] or by using the PayPal button below, for the 8 1/2 by 11 print. Larger prints are special order.

This is what the 8 1/2 by 11 print might look like framed without a mat. (A mat and frame are not included.)

Henry the Owl, New Giclee Print by Elizabeth Ruffing

“Henry the Owl”, my second watercolor on Claybord, is printed and available in our Ruffings Etsy shop.

I used my Claybord tools to scratch out the whitest feathers on his head and add lots of fine details. Henry’s eyes are particularly striking. He’s a sweet little fellow, kind of shy 🙂

Here’s my second video, of me painting “Henry the Owl”. I just put it up over on my YouTube channel. Please visit my online personal journal for more in depth information about my paintings, and the latest on what I’m up to in my studio.

Black-capped Chickadee and Iris by A E Ruffing

Black-capped Chickadee and Iris by A E RuffingI painted this familiar bird looking alert and inquisitive, the way I often see him in the garden. He’s a striking little bird, and I think the soft mauves of the iris make him look all the more dramatic, with his sharply-contrasted blacks and whites and grays. I set him against a pale yellow sky, with a deep blue-shadowed tree and distant woods of golds, greens, mauves, and blues behind him.
