Slug fun facts for kids (or adults)

Plush Stuffed Animal Hug Me Slug by Elizabeth Ruffing, in assorted colorsI noticed in my Hug Me Slugs and Friends toy shop stats a couple of weeks ago that someone was searching for “Elizabeth Ruffing fun facts for kids”. I didn’t know if someone wanted to know about me, or about my stuffed toy slugs. To start, I decided I’d compile a list of fun facts about slugs in general and post them here.

Hug Me Slugs and Friends by Elizabeth Ruffing, banner with Hug Me Cats, Toad, and SlugBut first…I set up a new Facebook page for my toys. So, please come “like” Hug Me Slugs and Friends on Facebook. I’ll be posting new toys there at the same time I put them up for adoption. I’ve also decided to try posting my Hug Me Slugs on eBay from time to time. My user ID is hugmeslug! As always, you can find my toys at hugmeslug.com which is the address for my Etsy toy shop.

Now for some slug trivia!

Slug fun facts for kids and anyone else who is interested in slugs:

Sammy the Slug, a giant yellow banana slug, is the mascot for the University of California, Santa Cruz. He comes to their sports events and other functions too. Students yell, “Go Slugs!” and “Slime ‘em!” to support their teams.

The Banana Slug Song”, written by Kevin Beals and performed by the Bungee Jumpin’ Cows, is sung to the tune of “Twist and Shout” and goes like this:

You know I love my baby.
I like the way that she hugs.
People don’t understand,
She’s a banana slug.

She’s got just one foot,
But she ain’t got no toes.
She just hangs out in the forest,
Helpin’ it decompose.

That’s right, she’s a banana slug, Ba na na na na na na (repeat)
Ba-na-na-slug!

The way you shake your antenna,
Oh it gives me such bliss.
C’mon, c’mon, c’mon banana slug,
Well let me give you a kiss.

Oh when you slide through the forest,
You know you look so fine.
C’mon, c’mon, c’mon banana slug,
And let me feel your slime

Ba ba ba banana slug, Ba na na na na na na (repeat)
Ba-na-na-slug!

Now I’m broke up about my baby.
Found out she doesn’t need me.
She told me just the other night,
That she is also a he. Hermaphroditic she’s a…

Now some folks think that she’s gross,
But I don’t hear that jive,
‘Cause if it weren’t for my baby,
This forest might not survive.

Banana slug Ba na na na na na na (repeat)
Ba-na-na-slug!

There is another song called “Banana Slug” by the Banana Slug String Band on their “Dirt Made My Lunch” CD. You can listen to it on their website. It goes like this:

(Chorus) Banana slugs, banana slugs,
I like them, they’re beautiful.
Banana slugs, banana slugs,
They’re part of the circle.

Sticky as the peanut butter, shade of yellow,
Look like banana, but oh so mellow,
Good life givers, living on the ground,
Chewing on the leaves when they fall down.

(Chorus)

On the side of their head there’s an breathing hole,
They have one foot but plenty of soul.
All day long they work and they toil,
Chewing on the leaves to renew the soil.

(Chorus)

Well the slugs make the soil to grow the trees.
Trees make air for us to breathe.
They’re part of the circle that lets things grow.
So be kind to banana slugs and let things flow.

(Chorus)

If you’re walking down the path and you see a slug.
You can bend down and hold it, you can give it a hug.
You can pick it up, it won’t bite or hiss.
You can show it that you love it, just give it a kiss.

(Chorus)

Banana slugs, slugs, slugs, slugs, slugs, slugs, banana slugs!

A flirtatious slug named Mub, along with his friend Grub, a snail, help save the day in the animated movie “Epic” by guarding the pod everyone needs to keep the forest alive. They keep it moist because they’re kind of slimy.

The movie “Monsters University” opens with a slug who is late for his first day of classes. He rushes as fast as he can go, which isn’t very fast, and arrives at the end of the year!

The cartoon “Slugterra” features a whole bunch of slugs, who magically transform into more powerful versions of themselves when they travel at 100 miles per hour. They participate in duels and give off a special energy that allows life to exist in Slugterra.

BabyTV has a sweet lavender and yellow slug-like character called “Tulli” who explores the world around her. Tulli is like a toddler and everything is new to her.

Judy Darley wrote two poems about slugs, including “Slugs Slither Slowly” and “Instructions On How To Kiss A Slug”, which goes like this:

Close your eyes, and hold your nose,
Pretend you’re just smelling a rose.
Purse your mouth, tight and round,
Bend down almost to the ground.
Ignore the slime, kiss him quick,
And don’t forget to wipe your lips!

Susan Pearson wrote a children’s book called Slugs in Love which was illustrated by Kevin O’Malley. It tells the story of Marylou, a shy slug who has a crush on Herbie and wants him to notice her. They leave messages for each other written with their slimly slug trails.

Seymore Slug Starts School is a children’s book by Carey Armstrong-Ellis. Seymore is the new slug in his town/compost heap and he is nervous about his first day at Slug School. He even has a Fairy Slugmother who tries to help him but doesn’t quite know what she is doing.

On May 28th some people celebrate a holiday created by Thomas and Ruth Roy called “The Slugs Return From Capistrano Day”.

A slug is a gastropod. Some kinds of slugs live on land, some in the sea, and some live in freshwater. Real-life slugs play an important role in the environment by helping with composting. They help turn decaying things into fertilizer so new plants will be able to grow in rich soil. I found more information about real-life slugs on this Fascinating Sluggy Facts blog post and on Wikipedia.

Toy shop update, more stuffed animal bunnies and slugs

Hug Me Bunnies handmade stuffed animal rabbits by artist Elizabeth Ruffing

Here are the stuffed toy Hug Me Bunnies I meant to post for Easter. They are now spring bunnies instead.

Hug Me Bunnies handmade stuffed animal rabbits by artist Elizabeth RuffingI used a few shades of pastel rabbit colors. Yes, bunnies do come in pastel colors.

Easter flowers, narcissus and hyacinths on the work table of artist Elizabeth RuffingHere is a picture of my pretty Easter flowers as well. Happy belated Easter!

Hug Me Slugs mommy and baby handmade stuffed animals by artist Elizabeth RuffingOh, and here are mommy and baby slugs wishing you a belated happy Mother’s Day! I missed a couple of holidays.

Hug Me Slug handmade stuffed animal banana slug by artist Elizabeth RuffingI have some new fleece Hug Me Slugs, like this banana slug, along with some camouflage, turquoise, teal, light blue, and hot pink slugs. You can find my art toys in our Ruffing’s shop.

Hug Me Slugs handmade stuffed animal banana slugs by artist Elizabeth RuffingIn the background of this photo, under the camouflage slugs, is one of the boxes I got to hold my sewing supplies. Miss Bertie, below, stole a needle with upholstery thread, and swallowed it before I could get her. Now I keep everything I’m using in a box with a latch, so I can close it if she comes snooping around. String and thread are very dangerous for cats, and can cause serious problems.

Bertie tabby Maine Coon cat, Elizabeth RuffingThankfully, the upholstery thread passed without harming her. We were very worried. I was in the same room at the time, but she sneaked in without my seeing her poking around my pincushion. I keep the box closed whenever I get up and walk around too. If you sew, please remember to keep your supplies safely away from your pets. I keep mine in a separate room, except when I am hand sewing, but cats can be stealthy when they want to steal something that looks like fun.

Artist Elizabeth Ruffing with a new short haircutI have been doing okay, a little up and down with the PVC’s, and some chest pain. I’m still waiting for the results of another test, but I still don’t expect anything unusual to show up. I am trying to sleep later, which seems to help. I was feeling shabby after being worn out for a while, and so I gave myself a haircut. That makes me feel better too.

Phoebe, tabby cat behind a floral curtain, with Santana, orange cat, looking in the window Elizabeth RuffingSantana the Peeping Tom Cat wakes me up sometimes. He likes to show up and look in the window early in the morning now. He’s discovered he can climb the settee and rest his paws on the sill. No matter who wakes me up, I try to stay in bed longer, so I won’t get fatigued.

Storm clouds in the sky with a bare branch, Elizabeth RuffingExercise is helping too. I like to go for walks. We had a string of storms, and now it is getting hot. I am considering joining a gym for the summer, when it is too hot to go walking. I’m not sure I’ll make it there. I don’t often feel that sociable, and I like peace and quiet. I should probably try it at least.

Jojo, black-and-white tuxedo cat with her bottom sticking out from a pile of craft supplies, in artist Elizabeth Ruffing's workroomI have been doing custom orders, and have yet to finish the sock cat skirts I have partly done so I can photograph them. They are really cute. I have been going to a block-of-the-month quilting group, but I barely have the time to get the blocks ready each month. That is Jojo, diving over my quilting packet. She thought she was being pretty stealthy herself. My kitty helpers are very silly.

Here’s to equality for everyone, and compassion for all living beings.

Hearts, butterflies, and pinwheels

Red and green pinwheel with shadow on the ground, Elizabeth RuffingI finally got to the cardiologist, and had some tests done. It was sure stressful waiting for the two weeks for my appointment, but it turned out okay. My heart is beating irregularly, but it is structurally normal, which means the improvising it is doing is mostly just an annoyance. It is something I’ll have to get used to, even though it feels weird. It can be set off by anything that throws your body off, like fatigue or stress. Unfortunately, even normal amounts of tension can get it going. I have to work on getting more rest. The cardiologist said if it acts up, doing some exercise and getting my heart rate up can help.

I’m just waiting for some blood work to come back, to make sure I’m not anemic, that my electrolytes and magnesium are in balance, and that my thyroid is fine. I don’t expect any problems with that. The lab technician gave me this pinwheel on my way out. I was so relieved at the time. I’m keeping it as a memento on my desk as a reminder.

Grass green Hug Me Slug stuffed animal art toy by artist Elizabeth RuffingI got to see my heart beating on the echo-cardiogram, which I thought was the coolest thing. I wish I had a video. I really do. The valves clap together like little hands, so precisely. They look like the furry hands of Dr Seuss’ characters. It’s amazing to watch. There is something very reassuring about seeing that and thinking about it.

I still feel stressed over the whole thing, which is giving me pins and needles, something else that acts up when I feel tension. Hopefully I will calm down more as the days go by and I’ll get used to the idea.

Grass green Hug Me Slug stuffed animal art toy by artist Elizabeth Ruffing with pink butterfly gift bag and personalized hang tagI tried to get some Easter bunnies made, but people keep adopting Hug Me Slugs for Easter. So, I guess it is okay that I didn’t get my stuffed animal Hug Me Bunnies posted yet. I do have Hug Me Bunnies, if anyone is looking for one. This slug is a gift and the customer asked if I could gift wrap her. I have lots of gift bags. I seem to favor the ones with butterflies on them.

I have plans to make a lot of different toys, but I end up making slugs because people ask for them. I’m glad people enjoy them. I think I forgot to mention before that I passed my 500th toy sale.

Multicolored quilting fabrics in a pile waiting to be washed, Elizabeth RuffingI’m trying to rest more when I need to, but I’m also trying to get things done. I pre-washed more fabrics today, and I have stacks of fleece to sew into stuffed animals.

Pile of pink and lavender fleece cut out, waiting to be sewn into toys, Elizabeth RuffingI, at long last, potted my poor African violet leaf that has been waiting in a coffee cup on my desk. I have more violets to re-pot.

African violet rooted with new leaf growth, Elizabeth RuffingI hope to get around to cleaning out the flower bed in front of the porch, before more flowers poke through, but that seems like a lot right now. I have some catching up to do, with rest and with projects both.

Pink camellia flower in my hand, Elizabeth RuffingThe camellias are in bloom. They are so pretty. I picked this bloom up from the ground on our way back from a walk recently.

Cuddling sleeping black and tabby cats curled up together on my bed, Elizabeth RuffingFor the past couple of days, the weather has been dreary. The kitties responded by piling together on my bed for napping. I thought it was so cute the way they lined up in a cuddle chain. That is Phoebe, the shyest of the group, sandwiching herself between two friends.
