Videos of my mom at work on her American Shorthair figurine and a new kitty resident!

My mom finished her American Shorthair silver tabby cat art doll figurine, Sugar, and I took a bunch of short videos of her working in paperclay. I always miss a lot of the steps because I am off doing my own projects or feeding and cleaning up after our real-life kitties. I will post parts 1-6 below, if you would like a sneak peek into her creative process. Sugar the American Shorthair silver tabby cat art figurine can be found by clicking here.

We also have a new kitty resident! Harrison showed up a couple of months ago. I knew someone was outside who was new because the cats were making a ruckus. I could see his eyes in the dark when I went out with my flashlight. One night I was out at 3am, trying to stop our cat Chester, who had refused to come in the house that evening, from chasing him. After that, Chester had to come in early!

Eventually, Harrison started to pop out of the brush at dinner time, and he got used to me. One day, he followed me into the cat yard, which is enclosed with a cat fence to keep everyone safe.

Santana, our neighbors’ cat who lives with us, was disappointed because he had made friends with Harrison and wanted him to join in his activities.

Thanks to friends who donated toward his care, Harrison got neutered and vaccinated and microchipped. I am taking him in for boosters still. He is having a very nice time playing with toys in “La Maisonnette des Chats” – The Little House of Cats, our name for our kitty house.

He goes out in the cat yard when it pleases him but it has been hot outside. He enjoys the air conditioning.

Here is a 10 minute tour of the cat yard in the evening, for you to enjoy.

I hope everyone is staying cool. If anyone would like to donate toward the kitties’ care we have ways you can help here: https://ruffings.com/the-little-house-of-cats Sales from this site also go toward taking care of the cats! Thanks so much!

Himalayan Kitten Art Doll Figurine, Pocket Kitten in Progress

Himalayan kitten art doll figurine the palm of the artist's hand

It’s baby kitty time. My mom is painting the dress on her little Himalayan kitten art doll figurine.

Ruby, our calico cat, helped herself to a drink out of her water pitcher, while my mom was painting. The water was clean at the time! Here is a video showing my mom, artist Anne Ruffing, painting her kitten: https://youtube.com/shorts/FIOv8eSGTNA

This tiny Himalayan kitten will sit in the skirt pocket of the Himalayan cat art doll she just finished painting. I need to design and sew a pinafore with a pocket that will be just he right size for the Himalayan kitten.

My mom sculpted this kitten from paperclay. She and her mama are both original, one-of-kind artist dolls and will be together as a set.

In addition to making videos of our art dolls, I want to design and make sewing patterns for doll clothing, and make some sewing instruction videos. I first learned to sew by making doll clothing, and I would like to pass that knowledge on to other people. I eventually made my own clothing through high school and college. I think people may find sewing, especially garment sewing, somewhat intimidating, and I think doll clothes are a great place to start, even if you don’t have a sewing machine. I started sewing by hand, and I still like sewing by hand!

While we have been hard at work, the cats are lounging around on this very nice day. Chester says hello from the porch. steps

Jefferson looks wide awake with his golden-brown eyes that have soft yellow rings toward their centers. He is tan with blue polka dots, and wears a red tie with tiny gold polka dots under his blue shirt collar.

Jefferson’s personal mission is to find the famous “bunny trail” from the Easter song…the one that Peter Cottontail comes “hoppin’ down.” He researched giant volumes in the library and combed the Internet for information.

Thinking he found a lead, Jefferson took a picnic lunch to his neighbor’s yard, so he could spend the entire day looking along a path that goes into the woods behind his house, but there was no sign of that “Bunny Trail.”

Weary of searching, Jefferson sat on a log, unpacked his brown paper bag, and ate his carrots and lettuce. Then he sighed, yawned, and vowed to set out on his quest again tomorrow.

Jefferson is a handmade miniature original one-of-a-kind rabbit art doll figurine. I hand sculpted him from paperclay over wood, in multiple stages, to allow for drying and detailing. I painted him by hand, under a magnifying light, with tiny brushes, using acrylic paints. Jefferson is signed and sealed with gloss varnish for protection and preservation.

Durwin has one blue eye and a pleasant little smile that never leaves his face. Although he’s a real monster, he wouldn’t want to frighten anybody in his neighborhood. He has dozens of friends who leave him special monster treats that they order from monstertreats.com especially for him.

Durwin is striped in blue, pale turquoise, white, and cinnamon, and has a red heart. His golden horns are always visible, even in dim light, as he waits quietly in the backyard for his treats.
